Have ever done a request that looked absolutely ridiculous As the title states I'm talking about a cut, style and/or color requested by an adult client that looked absolutely ridiculous (for whatever reason) yet the client loved it. And I know, "It's only hair", but it's also your rep on the line. Is there anything you refuse to do, regardless of the money? I'm not talking about the difficult, AH clients, but rather the type of services that you just don't want notoriety for doing?

Poctah I used to have client who was in his 70s and wanted his hair exactly like moe from the 3 stooges (a straight across bowl cut for anyone unfamiliar). Anyways first time he said no one ever did it right and he wanted it exactly like his hair. I pulled a pic and he said yes like that just to verify because I knew the haircut was terrible. So I did it exactly like the pic even though i thought it looked silly. He was so excited that I did it correct and didn't try

to change his mind and became a regular and tipped me $20 every cut and got his hair trimmed every 3 weeks (this was 15 years ago when I charge $15 for a men's cut). I'd say give them what they want and make them happy.

Northern33 was a receptionist at a salon before going to cosmo school and we had one lady come in every month or so to get literal stripes on her head. think those skunk stripes that were popular in like the early 2000s, but bright red with white blonde stripes. i thought it looked so ridiculous but she loved it

_Sir5964 The worst thing I ever did to a client, per her request, was pick up half her hair (like it was going to be put half up/half down) and cut it off into a short bob about ear length. BUT the hair in her nape stayed long, about to the bra strap. I made her sign a hold- harmless card, and I made promise not to tell anyone I did it LMAO. It's a true story, she was thrilled, and I never saw her again.

ibimus9 I had a client with super long (nearly waist length) curly hair. She asked me to take a Mohawk section and cut it to about 3 inches long. Just the Mohawk. No blending. No layering. She liked the way it poofed on top of her head when it was that short. I must've asked a half a dozen times if she was sure that was right before I made the cut. She loved it so there's that.

Spyderfool I did a half jellyfish cut half buzz fade. Looked as terrible as it sounds. Never again.

redandwearyeyes Hair Stylist I have a lot of queer and alternative clients so I do all the mullets, bowl cuts, etc. Those aren't weird to me. I haven't had anyone ask for a jellyfish cut but I'd probably talk them out of it. The worst is usually from teenagers who show me either anime references that won't translate to real life or obviously DIY'd hair that looks objectively
  • 10
bad. I will try to translate it to something good but some of these kids want intentionally ugly hair and I just can't abide by that.
  • 11
theepeebsie Pre fashion mullet revival, I had a gal...who was over 6ft tall and built like power lifter bring me the Aladdin Sane cover for her inspiration. I love a Bowie inspo but I tried to explain, in a value neutral non judgmental way, that it might not translate the same on her. She explained that she was a helicopter rescue pilot in Alaska, she wears a helmet 90% of her

life and she'd always wanted that cut/color but no one wanted to give it to her. So we did it, I thought she looked nuts, but she was OBSESSED in love with it. Just elated and it made me love it for her, so all of that is to say... sometimes it's nice to give someone something that you might not like but it could be their dream hair....but if you really like doing specific things I recommend focusing your efforts on those services and having great recommendations for other stylist you like to se

Square-Money-3935 I was the client in this situation AA Mid-2000s in the suburbs of a blue metro in a red state. Not a lot of queer friendly salons! I walked into a salon, asked for an appointment with someone who would "actually cut my hair". Talked to the stylist about my fauxhawk anime bangs dream and I could see that poor woman die inside right in front of me.
  • 14
She offered some tweaks to make it work for my hairtype and I LOVED IT. Always tipped well. Went to her for 7 years and I was forbidden from telling anyone who cut my hair (jokingly, but was it?)
  • 15
FrauleinFangs My own mother. For some reason she insisted she wanted her haircut so that when it was all pulled to the front it looked perfectly even, but she also wanted it to be straight across the back. I explained that, for the length she wanted, that's not how hair works. I spent a good amount of time figuring out exactly what length she wanted and showing her that if it was straight across the back and straight across the front, then
  • 16
there would have to be a disconnect somewhere. She didn't want layers or blending, she wanted blunt straight cuts only and she wanted this length in front and this length in back and she also has super thick straight hair. So I did what she wanted, with my uncertainty very clear and at the end she said it was exactly what she wanted. So I was like...alright fine.
  • 17
Then a week or so later she let me know she went to some rando to get it "fixed". Whatever.
  • 18
themooniscool I've done every cut and color in the books. If you're giving me money I will give you whatever you want. Except updos and perms.
  • 19
Ohlookashinyy I had a client request that I cut her hair "as if there was a bowl on my head, cut everything that would be sticking out". Wanted a legit bowl cut. I hate doing these wolf cuts and flow/mullets but I will do them. Haven't had a a jellyfish cut request (yet) but would probably refuse that.
  • 20
I will not do updos (not good enough, do not enjoy), and no kids under 18. I don't want to deal with squirmy kids, and the preteen/teen phase where kid wants style A but mom wants style B. I don't want my name anywhere near that lol because it's either going to turn out an uneven cut, or an ugly compromise style where nobody is happy.
  • 21
SmallTownClown I do not like super stacked bobs. Not my jam
  • 22
Soad_lady Ohhhh yeah. I worked in a salon that was probably 50/50 fashion colors vs natural. It's your rep sure, but if they love it, that shows your dexterity of your work! Which only helps your rep

looot1991 Haven't we all had one or two of these Sweet up I have a client who comes in every effing Friday so won't let me bust the rollers out and we put so much gel in it that it's literally roller parts it looks like she still has the willers in her hair when she walks out it is disturbing But you know what she pays me
  • 24
Proud-Emu-5875 I had a client with super coarse, super straight hair that wanted a (think Elvira but a bi-level mullet) she wanted me to take my thinning shears and blunt texturize thru her crown and inch from her scalp, claiming her hair was "just, so heavy" & I'm like "well, yeah. unless you carry a plasma ball around with you, your hair isn't going to stand straight
  • 25
out from your head. you're going to have to use product or I'm going to end up texturizing this all down to a flattop." it was awful and she was totally unreceptive to updating her cut from 1982.
  • 26
jasperandjuniper Colour Specialist I had a walk in guest once described how she wanted her haircut to look like "a 5 year old girl who's parents cut her hair." So like very blunt with chopped looking bangs. It was a vibe.
  • 27
muy Optiminihilist I have a client who I've had for probably 10 years who gets the skunk stripes and wants platinum as can be and black as can be. Her hair is so awful and she pressures me to post it and tag her and I'm always so embarrassed to post her hair because it doesn't look good. She has super fine hair and it just
  • 28
looks awful I hate to put my name on it. But she loves it so much and leaves me reviews and is a good loyal client. She's a lovely woman but I hate doing her hair so so much.
  • 29
cerebrallights Literally just happened to me yesterday. A regular of mine wanted a disconnected French crop with a line shaved in all around. I did it for him bc he's chill but I have never had my heart sink to my as much as I did with that haircut. Never have done it before cause it's not really a thing in my area lol
  • 30
Therealdanitanner Yes, today. She had about 4 inches of baby fine, downy 4c hair. She wanted straight extensions. I told her, she didn't care. That girl.left with a mullet.
  • 31
KellynHeller Not me but back when I was in the salon, my old manager had this one client who had the worst mullet I've ever seen. It was legit finger length curls on top not even blended into the back which was slightly wavy and below the shoulders.
  • 32
The woman looked like she literally just had a short clown wig on over her hair. I asked my manager and apparently thats exactly what the client wanted. She tried to talk her out of it but she loves that haircut. I had to walk away to hide my laughter
  • 33
bessa100 Not me, but back in the 90's my manager had a client in her 70's who got bright orange in the back and lighter orange in the front. It always reminded me of a baboons
  • 34
hangingsocks I used to have a client who was an heiress. She was totally nuts. Wanted her hair cut in the shape of an egg. Literally she would compliment her cut if it "looks really like an egg this time". Also would have me bleach the top and color the sides and back brown.
  • 35
And wanted her ears white walked and the line to carve back to neckline in a question mark shape on both sides. She had been heavily involved with lots of very famous bands. Was from a very famous family. Had done a ton of drugs. She would have screaming crying episodes regularly. It was at the beginning of my career. It was absolutely insane. And then even crazier, I saw an intuitive.
  • 36
The intuitive said I had a client that was very dark and had bad energy that was harmful to me. She told me that client could never come back to me again. That I needed to be protected from her. Swear to God, egg head lady died before her next appointment. I.... I haven't thought about this in years.

-Chemical My mom was a loctitian for a few years and had a friend that would come for braids, the guy owned a good portion of land in the state and asked my mom to give him a bald fade around his whole ahead except the top and wanted her to CUT the shape of his land into his head, but corn rows at the top. That not even it, he asked for two dreads in the front of his head... two and then he was off. I don't know if hair texture makes a difference in how mad it looked
  • 38
but he is white and his super pale skin and even paler scalp made the cut obvious from like 30 ft away, seriously, we were watching him leave and it just got worse the farther he was. It was awful and he never did it again, we think he was a little high tbh, just started choosing things out of her catalog and got too deep to not pay 500 dollars. Which he only got
  • 39
charged because it was a very small town and if someone heard that she did that to such a prominent and well known man, she wanted it to be worth it and deter others who might want the same mess. Also, for visual help, this man looked like a car salesman, wore suits all the time, drove like 5 different cars. Dude looks like he has a vacation home in 6 different countries but chose to turn into kid rock for a week.
